The Government of Saskatchewan has announced a change in how property taxes are being evaluated. Previously, property taxes were calculated on 70% of the assessed value on residential properties. Starting 2017, the percentage of value set by the provincial government will be increased to 80%. City Manager Jeff Ward, explains that the City of Estevan uses an agency called Saskatchewan Assessment Management Agency (SAMA) to do the assessment values of the properties.

"It needs top be clear to residents that the base date for this evaluation is January 1, 2015. We are getting a few calls because obviously the market changed since then. But the provincial agency only does them once every four years."

"If people have questions about their assessments or would like to make an appeal can call the tax assessment office at City Hall."

The changes to percentages of value include an increase from 70% to 80% on residential, including condo and multi-family properties. Commercial and industrial, railway and pipeline, and resource properties will remain at 100%. Agricultural land will remain at 55% and non arable pasture land will increase from 40% to 45%.

An open house will be held at City Hall on May 9 and 10th with representatives from SAMA. Those with questions regarding their assessments or looking to appeal, can call 306-634-1811. The deadline to file an appeal is May 29, 2017.
