The practice of social isolation has given people a lot more free time to spend at home and maybe need a little companionship. Because of that, the Estevan Humane Society has seen more people come through their doors to both foster and adopt.

"It has actually been pretty busy," says Humane Soceity Manager Michaela Pho. "We've been pretty steady with having people come in and the adoption side is actually growing."

There is an extra hoop to jump through right now to bring a new animal into your home, albeit a minor one, and that's setting up an appointment with the Humane Society as the building isn't being fully staffed. You can do so by calling them at (306) 634-3444.

Volunteering at the Humane Society is a different story however as they are not allowed in the building, and staff members are only there for limited time throughout the day. There is still a way for the general public to held out.

"Donations are always accepted, people can leave them at the door cause sometimes we aren't here just because we've cut back on the hours of staffing just to kind of compensate for us being closed, but right now we aren't taking volunteers just to control the numbers still, but we did open our doors to fostering."

Forms for fostering can be found at the Estevan Humane Society's website.

Since they've opened up to fostering, the applications have been coming in fairly frequently.

"We've got a few applications that I've been working through and hopefull we get more animals out just to give people something to do during this time."

The fostering is giving the staff at the Humane Society a bit of a break as well, because with the lack of volunteers in the office, keeping the animals entertained has become more of a challenge than normal. That challenge has been made easier though thanks to the reduced numbers at the Humane Society since they've been over capacity for a long time.

"I don't want to jynx it but we're actually doing pretty well on our intake side of things. Our cats are not over capacity anymore, so that's kind of nice, but I'm sure we'll se an incline here as the weather starts to warm up, we'll probably see more kittens."

If you want to support the Humane Society as well but don't have the room to house an animal for adoption or fostering, donations are still accepted. There isn't anything specific that needs to be done if you're donating pet food or toys, and even an open bag that your dog or cat wouldn't eat can still be donated just by dropping them off at the door.
