The Estevan Literacy Group held their Battle of the Books on Friday afternoon at Spruce Ridge School.

"I think it went very well," shared Regina Barz, the Literacy Coordinator with the Estevan Area Literacy Group. "I would prefer to have even more kids but so far so good, compared to last year we had twice as many kids."

The Battle of the Books is a chance for the Grade 7's and 8's of Estevan to prove their knowledge of 10 set books and the team with the most points wins. The books chosen are a variety of genres with some of the books suggested by the teachers of Estevan. Many of the students have noted they wouldn't normally read the books on the list if it wasn't for the battle and a majority of the students agreed their favourite book this year was OCDaniel by Wesley King which most had never heard of.

Mixed Minds, was the team that came in first for the third year in a row. Students Kristin, Laura, Seth, and Jesse, from Spruce Ridge School were excited to win. They gave this advice to anyone interested in entering the next battle; "Try it! It's a lot of fun. If you enjoy reading you just read the books and then it's one day, and you get food after. It's a lot of fun to answer the questions and to spend quality time with your friends."

The Estevan Literacy Club is thankful for the support they receive from the Estevan United Way and Sask Lottery, as the support they received helped them organize the Battle of the Books.

The next Battle of the Books takes place on March 29 at Westview School for Grades 5 and 6.
