It's no surprise to anyone that has driven on paved roads in Canada that the spring weather always uncovers some nasty potholes. Surprisingly though, Estevan is sitting pretty clean when it comes to potholes. When it comes to fixing the tire wreckers, the fixes take a few steps to deal with according to city roads and drainage manager Norm Mack.

"As of this week, we've deployed our sweepers to sweep our main arteries. For the most part, most of them arteries are free of snow and ice, so we decided to get these streets cleaned up so we can continue on with repairing some of these potholes that come to us every spring."

When it comes to the main roads in Estevan, most seem to be pretty free and clear of potholes, but there's the odd one once you get out into the residential areas of the city thanks to preparation from the city beforehand.

"For the most part, our city's in pretty good shape. We take all our snow off the streets and hall it away, therefore it eliminates a lot of the water that lays on the streets and causes potholes."

Crews have already been out to fill the few potholes that are causing problems in the city thanks to most of the water already being cleared up in the city, but some of the parking lots, back alleys, and sidewalks have patches still flooded out. Thanks to the quick turn around of temperatures, the city is already working on thawing the ground so it can absorb that laying water into the water table below.

"A lot of the moisture you see laying on the grassy areas, that'll disappear once the frost dissipates in the ground. Our steamers are actually out all this week now that most of our streets are melted off, but now it'll move into the back lanes. There's a lot of snow in the backyards that has to melt so we're making sure all those catch basins in the back lanes are free and open to take water."

The city is limited in some areas as to what and where they can work because some of the lanes are still a little too wet to be bringing heavy equipment over, but rest assured they will have their mess cleaned up as soon as the weather can help them out.
