A workplace incident on March 19, 2017, resulted in fines for two separate out-of-province companies. The two companies pled guilty to Occupational Health and Safety violations in Weyburn Provincial Court last Tuesday.

Western Energy Services, which is operating as Horizon Drilling, pleaded guilty to failing to ensure all work is sufficiently and competently supervised resulting in a serious injury. The company was fined $71,429, with a surcharge of $28,571 for a total of $100,000.

Virden based Great Western Tong Services plead guilty to failing to provide an effective safeguard where a worker may contact a dangerous moving part of a machine, resulting in serious injury. They were fined $25,000 with a $10,000 surcharge.

The incident in 2017 resulted in a worker being hospitalized after having their forearm entangled in the moving gear of a power tong.
