Mark Pettitt, a stalwart figure within the Estevan community, has been deeply involved with the Estevan United Way for over two decades. Speaking with SUN 102, he reflected on his journey, from his inaugural steps onto the United Way board to his current role as president for the second time, revealing the profound impact the organization has had on both him and the community.

Pettitt's journey began in 1999, coinciding with his induction into the Estevan United Way during its annual Telethon—a baptism by fire into the organization's ethos of service and community engagement. Reflecting on his years of service, Pettitt remarked, "it's been a very rewarding, very humbling and very grateful experience in my personal life and being surrounded by so many dedicated volunteers and donors and member agencies and board members over the years has really instilled that we do live in a really great community here in Estevan."

Beyond its fundraising prowess, Pettitt underscored the Telethon's role as a platform for showcasing the diverse array of member agencies supported by the Estevan United Way. From the Estevan & Area Literacy Group to Envision Counselling, these organizations play a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life for Estevan residents—a fact poignantly exemplified by Pettitt's own experience of receiving assistance in the aftermath of a house fire.

Indeed, the impact of the United Way extends far beyond the confines of the telethon. Pettitt recounts a personal experience that underscored the organization's reach. "We had an unfortunate fire in our house in 2020," he shared. "The Canadian Red Cross got us a hotel room that night at 4:35 in the morning, and met with us the next day to give us a few meal vouchers till we found a place to live for the six months we were out of our house." Such acts of assistance exemplify the tangible difference made by the United Way's network of agencies, offering solace and support in times of crisis.

In addition to the telethon, Pettitt highlighted the significance of the Day of Caring, scheduled for May 29. This event epitomizes the spirit of community engagement, uniting volunteers to undertake various projects aimed at enhancing the welfare of Estevan's residence.
