The village of Gainsborough, located 114km straight east of Estevan on highway 18 and less than a kilometre from the Manitoba border, that has a population of 286 people as of the latest census in 2016. Much like many small communities in Saskatchewan, it's a farming community that comes together to support many of the local things in it's town.

"We had a bull riding rodeo here in June, and we do the usual fundraisers and events," says town councillour Cathy Murray, who's spent her entire life living in Gainsborourgh. "We do one a year for the swimming pool to keep it going. It's a volunteer board that runs the pool here. We usually have one for the community (movie) theatre."

After the flooding that much of southeast Saskatchewan experienced in 2014, Gainsborough has spent the last couple years recovering from the damage that was done. Besides older houses that had to be destroyed thanks to water damage, they also had a burst dam at Gainsborough to fix and patch up as part of the clean up. This year is the first that things have really returned back to normal.

"We're kind of status quo," Murray said after being asked about some of the damages. "We've got mostly everything that we needed to do done by now, but it takes a while to get back into normal."

There is a few things to look forward to in Gainsborough towards the end of the summer, including in August when they'll be hosting a party in the park where they'll be bringing in a band and supper as well.

When asked about what would bring people to come visit Gainsborough or to maybe even consider calling it home, Murray had a simple, straightforward answer.

"The people. They're friendly, everyone works together. The people."

Make sure next time you're down highway 18 east of Estevan, you take the time to stop and look around the great community of Gainsborough.

"A nice quiet year is fun."
